Prison Ministry

Bringing Hope Behind Bars

At Tumaini Ministries Uganda (TMU), our Prison Ministry is grounded in compassion, dignity, and the transformative power of the Gospel. We partner with Uganda Prison authorities, Good News Global, and local churches to bring holistic hope to men and women behind bars.

Established as part of our broader spiritual outreach since 2020, this ministry addresses not only spiritual brokenness but also practical needs that prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society. We are currently serving in nearby prison facilities, reaching hundreds of inmates with the message that true freedom is found in Jesus Christ.

Our approach combines biblical teaching, counseling, skills development, and family reconnection; helping inmates experience personal transformation and become productive members of their communities upon release.

Our Core Programs

Tumaini Ministries Uganda’s Prison Ministry Outreach reaches inmates in Soroti and surrounding prisons with the Gospel, practical skills, and restoration. We believe no one is beyond the redeeming power of Jesus.

Spiritual Counselling in Prisons

We offer one-on-one and group spiritual counseling sessions to inmates struggling with guilt, trauma, addiction, anger, and hopelessness. Our trained team listens with Christ-like compassion and guides individuals toward repentance, forgiveness, and inner healing through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Many inmates have shared testimonies of finding peace and purpose after encountering God’s love during these sessions. Spiritual counseling helps break chains of the past and plants seeds of a renewed life in Christ.

Bible Studies and Discipleship

Regular Bible studies and discipleship programs are at the heart of our prison ministry. We facilitate weekly or bi-weekly sessions where inmates study Scripture, learn foundational Christian truths, and grow in their walk with Jesus.

Topics include forgiveness, identity in Christ, overcoming temptation, and living a life of integrity. Graduates of our discipleship program often become peer leaders within the prison, mentoring others and leading small prayer groups.

Through these studies, many inmates have surrendered their lives to Christ and continue growing in faith even after release.

Vocational Skills Training

We equip inmates with practical, marketable skills to reduce recidivism and promote self-reliance. Training programs include:

  • Tailoring and garment making
  • Carpentry and basic woodworking
  • Modern agriculture and animal husbandry
  • Basic entrepreneurship and financial literacy

These hands-on sessions are conducted in partnership with skilled volunteers and prison authorities. Inmates leave with certificates and starter toolkits (where possible), giving them a real chance to earn an honest living upon release.

Reintegration Support

Reintegration is critical for long-term transformation. We walk with ex-offenders through:

  • Post-release mentorship and counseling
  • Job placement linkages and small business startup guidance
  • Temporary shelter and basic needs support during the critical first months
  • Ongoing spiritual accountability groups

Our goal is to help former inmates rebuild their lives with dignity, avoid re-offending, and become positive contributors to their families and communities.

Family Reconciliation

Prison often breaks families apart. We facilitate family reconciliation programs that include:

  • Mediated visits and counseling sessions between inmates and their spouses, children, and relatives
  • Family outreach events and prayer meetings
  • Teaching on biblical family values, forgiveness, and restoration

These efforts have helped heal relationships, restore trust, and strengthen family bonds — creating a supportive environment for the inmate’s successful return home.

A Message of Redemption

Every life matters to God—even those behind bars. Through this ministry, we see hardened hearts softened, broken lives restored, and former inmates become agents of change in their communities. The prison may confine the body, but the gospel sets the spirit free.
